I love to have conversations with people about music and I’ve designed my lessons to function more as a dialogue between two passionate students rather than a traditional teacher/student hierarchy. This means that after a lesson where we’ve worked on our repertoire or other material, I’m going to give you two things:
a specific practical exercise related to your goal
a more abstract concept or musical “sandbox” to play with creatively
I expect that you come to the next lesson having practiced the specific exercise and also being able to talk (using both your developing theoretical language and your own phrases and metaphors) about your discoveries and intuitions inside the musical “sandbox”. I have developed a couple dozen of these sandboxes suitable for anyone from a complete beginner to advanced student.
If you are a beginner musician I may have more experience than you, but I always remember that my experiences, skills, and goals will not map directly onto yours. My aim is to help you identify what you want and share how I’ve seen myself or other people get there.
I can go on forever about songs, chords, scales, rhythms, and all the other basic tools we use to understand music, but more than anything I love showing you how to express yourself creatively and be confident on your individual musical journey.
Beyond the fundamentals I’ve developed curriculums on the following intermediate/advanced topics:
understanding how to teach yourself
sounding good on the instrument
developing your ear and musical taste
composition & improvisation
spirituality of music and sound
esoteric history of philosophy and music
being a creative person
the art and skill practicing well

“Cole is a wonderful and patient teacher who's enthusiasm for music is obvious and transferable. I came to lessons with curiosity and a keyboard and over our weekly sessions he gave me a very thorough overview of musical concepts. I am happy to be able to put chords to my songs and am looking forward to learning more!"

“Cole is extremely patient and clear when explaining things which is great for me. When we switched to online lessons in March, Cole continued to provide thorough notes and links to additional content. This is the first time I’ve been able to actually understand what’s happening in music.”
